General Features and Conditions

Dual University Engagement:
Prepare your PhD thesis and conduct doctoral research at two or more universities, supervised by academics from each institution involved.

Residency Requirements:

Stay at each university for a duration specified by the respective institutions.

Collaborative Outcomes:
Receive multiple diplomas, with each diploma or diploma supplement referencing the cooperation between the universities.

Flexible Initiation:

Begin your PhD as a joint or double PhD from the start, or transition to a joint/double PhD during your studies (no later than one year before the defense).

Steps to Take When Interested in a Joint or Double PhD

Contact Your Supervisor:
Inform your current academic supervisor of your interest and discuss the possibilities of collaboration with other EURECA-PRO partner universities.

Find a Partner Supervisor:
Locate an academic supervisor at a EURECA-PRO partner university and discuss the possibilities for collaboration by means of a joint/double PhD.

Reach Out to Coordinators:
Contact your local EURECA-PRO Doctoral School coordinator for further guidance.
1 – A joint doctorate is a doctorate consisting of doctoral research and/or a (joint) training programme conducted at two or more universities under the supervision of academics connected to the universities involved where the candidate fulfils the requirements set by all universities part of the joint doctorate, thereby ultimately resulting in one diploma.
2 – A double doctorate is a doctorate consisting of doctoral research and/or a (joint) training programme conducted at two or more universities under the supervision of academics connected to the universities involved where the candidate fulfils the requirements set by all universities part of the double doctorate, ultimately resulting in multiple diplomas. Both diplomas (or diploma supplements) refer to the cooperation.
